Tension is quietly brewing between Nigeria and the United States over repeated comments from Washington about human rights and governance issues in Africa’s most populous nation.
While the US government says it is only promoting democracy and protecting human rights, many Nigerians believe the tone of America’s reports and statements often comes across as interference in the country’s internal matters.

The latest U.S. Human Rights Report on Nigeria raised concerns about police brutality, freedom of speech, and the treatment of protesters. It also accused security agencies of using excessive force during certain operations.
But Nigerian officials have pushed back strongly, saying the report does not reflect the country’s realities or the progress made in reforming the security sector.
A senior official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who spoke to JomoTV News, said:
“Nigeria takes human rights seriously, but our national security challenges are unique. We face terrorism, banditry, and other serious threats daily. So, while we appreciate America’s concern, our approach must be based on our own realities.”
Different Views From Nigerians
Some Nigerians on social media supported Washington’s call for accountability, saying human rights must be respected at all times.
Others, however, accused the U.S. of hypocrisy and “double standards,” arguing that no foreign power has the moral right to dictate how Nigeria should handle its internal affairs.
Political analyst Dr. Okey Nwosu told JomoTV News:
“It’s easy for the U.S. to talk about human rights, but they must also understand the context. Nigeria needs support and cooperation, not criticism that can damage our image internationally.”
